Rolltop Backpack Adventure Outdoor Lifestyle Product Photography in Los Angeles

As an adventure photographer, I love travelling to new locations (and in this case familiar destinations) to photograph new products in an outdoor environment. Further expanding my lifestyle product photography work with new items, I decided to take my black rolltop backpack to a few different locations around Los Angeles and capture some product shots in different locations.

In this blog post, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite product photos featuring the black travel rolltop backpack. All photos in this blog post were taken with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN ART lens and edited in Adobe Lightroom Classic.

About The Rolltop Backpack

In the past I have used other kinds of bags and carry-ons as props for lifestyle photoshoots. This was the first time I was shooting with a rolltop backpack, but I wanted to challenge myself with a new backpack design (I also like the style of the backpack).

A rolltop backpack works as a great travel accessory for lifestyle photoshoots in different outdoor locations like the beach, the forest, and the city. The black color of the backpack would also work well with different model’s wardrobes, as well.

ROLLTOP BACKPACK ON THE Nature Trail

I previously did a rustic outdoor photoshoot with an analog watch along a Los Angeles nature trail. I decided to photograph the rolltop backpack in the same location and experimented with a few different props (a hat and scarf) just to add some extra details in the composition.

One of the biggest issues in this location was that there weren’t many different surfaces to place the backpack on to create interesting compositions. Since this was also photographed during an overcast morning, the lighting was fairly even throughout the entire shoot.

Similar to the watch photoshoot, I wanted to incorporate an earthy and moody ambience to the edits. I’m overall satisfied with how some of the images turned out, but I think adding a model to the photoshoot would have been a great addition to tell the narrative even further.

Rolltop Backpack at Santa Monica Beach

A few days later, I decided to visit a beach in Santa Monica to capture some more photos of the rolltop backpack in a different outdoor location. The weather started out a bit cloudy in the morning, but the sun eventually rose in the early afternoon.

I photographed the backpack at the same time as I photographed the analog watch, which you can see more about in this blog post.

I tried to experiment with different compositions with the backpack, but again, there weren’t a lot of interesting spaces where I could take product shots of the backpack with interesting compositions.

I ended up waiting until later in the day to take some photos with the rolltop backpack, as I wanted some of the light to reflect on the backpack, rather than having another overcast photoshoot like at the nature trail.

For this photoshoot, I decided to not include any props and just keep this shoot simple, drawing full attention to the rolltop travel bag.

The cluster of rocks ended up being the best spot to capture product photos of the backpack. I was hoping to get some more waves crashing or to get closer to the ocean, but the waves were too peaceful so I kept the backpack closer to shore.

Final Thoughts

The aim of these photoshoots is to capture simple and clean product photos of travel accessories with an authentic outdoor setting and in natural light.

As a travel and outdoor lifestyle photographer, I’m always excited at the opportunity to capture images in nature and beautiful destinations.

Backpacks and travel bags make a great accessory to use for brand campaigns driven with a travel narrative.

Thank you for reading this blog post and until next time.
