Sumida Street and Travel Photography in Tokyo Japan

Sumida City is a ward based in the bustling city of Tokyo, Japan. As a street and travel photographer, Sumida City offers a mix of high-rise buildings and narrow alleyways that make for a great variety of photography compositions.

This was my first stop in my visit to Tokyo, Japan back in April 2024 when I arrived at the city during the end of cherry blossom season.

While I visited a lot of different wards during my week-long stay in Tokyo, I probably captured the most street photography content in Sumida.

In this blog post, I’m sharing some of my favorite street and travel photography images taken in Sumida City. All of the photos were captured on my Sony a7R III.

Sunrise in Sumida City

Because I was staying in Sumida City, I woke up to capture some nice sunrise street photography images. The early mornings up until early afternoon were pretty quiet so you’re able to get a nice view of the high-rise buildings and city landscape without crowds of people walking by.

 

The Tokyo Skytree

One of the most notable landmarks of Sumida City is the Tokyo Skytree - a television broadcasting tower that features two observation decks that provide a view of the city.

Even if you don’t visit the Skytree itself, you can catch views of the beautiful structure in different parts around Sumida City. You can see some examples in my blog post about the Tokyo Skytree here.

 

Street Photography at Night

The small alleyways and corners around Sumida City feature a lot of local shops that create perfect compositions for street photography at night when you’re not looking to capture too many people in a scene.
