Beach Themed Jewelry Photoshoot | Los Angeles Fashion Photography
I recently had the opportunity to produce a beach themed jewelry photoshoot featuring model and actress Isa. The photoshoot featured a mix of lifestyle portraits with Isa wearing rings, necklaces, and earrings, close up product shots of the jewelry, and an editorial beach shot at the end of the photoshoot.
The beachside in Santa Monica made for the perfect backdrop to capture this beautiful jewelry shoot at sunrise. In this blog post, I’ll be taking you through the process of producing the photoshoot with some of the final edited images.
Beach Jewelry Photoshoot Mood Board
In preparing for this photoshoot, I provided Isa with a mood board featuring some jewelry photo ideas for her to reference. Whenever I work with a model, I try to provide a mood board so that they can see if they are interested in the type of photoshoot I’m producing, but also to give them ideas on the day of the photoshoot for how they want to pose.
Of course, it’s important to allow for spontaneity during the shoot, but having a plan to start from is a great way to have a foundation to build from, rather than starting from zero.
Beach Locations for Jewelry Photos
As a Los Angeles photographer, the beach is one of the most common (and one of my favorite) locations for lifestyle and editorial fashion shoots featuring models. I enjoy photographing models during sunrise at the beach because the model is frontlit by the sun with the ocean in the background.
For this photoshoot, I wanted the jewelry to be properly lit since I was only relying on natural light. While a majority of the shots I captured were close-up portraits, I wanted to utilize different parts of the beach to get a variety of images.
How To Photograph Jewelry with Models
When it comes to photographing jewelry in a lifestyle setting, you want to make sure that the model knows how close you’re going to crop in. Because Isa’s jewelry pieces were mainly necklaces and bracelets, I told her that a lot of the photos were going to be close-up portraits. As a result, she made sure to keep her hands close to her face so we had a lot of options to choose from at the end of the shoot.
There were times when I photographed only her hands to focus on the rings that she wore. I also made sure to get some wider shots so that she could experiment with a bit of different posing.
Best Tips for a Lifestyle Jewelry Photoshoot
Organize your thoughts and ideas with a mood board that shows the location of your planned photoshoot and model casting
Confirm with your model how you want to photograph the jewelry so they know how to pose. Close-up shots are important, but be sure to get as much variety as you can in one shoot
If working in natural light, make sure you choose the right time of day for the shoot that’ll show your jewelry pieces in the best light
Avoid over-retouched photos when working with models. For any kind of brand shoot, aim for an authentic look when a model is wearing your product
