Outdoor Lifestyle Photography for Accessories: Sunglasses

As an outdoor lifestyle photographer, sunglasses are a common accessory that I will include in some of my photoshoot sessions. I like to travel to different parts of the city to capture models wearing sunglasses in a variety of locations.

In this blog post, I will be showcasing a gallery of some of my favorite outdoor lifestyle photos featuring sunglasses.

Sunglasses in the City

I like to visit Downtown Los Angeles to capture street and fashion lifestyle photos with other models. The right pair of sunglasses can work with different wardrobe options if planned accordingly.

In the photos below, I collaborated with male model Nolan O’Connor near the Walt Disney Concert Hall to get a variety of lifestyle images featuring different outfits. For this particular set, Nolan brought sunglasses to pair with his suit and watch for a more formal lifestyle photoshoot.

Sunglasses on the Beach

I would say that the beach is the most common location I photograph sunglasses for a lifestyle photoshoot session. It’s a good accessory to use both from a fashion standpoint, but also from a functional standpoint since there aren’t any high-rise buildings to shield the model’s eyes from the sun.

Photographing Sunglasses in Natural Light

I have talked about one of the biggest benefits of shooting portraits during sunrise or sunset (compared to the middle of the day) is that you might be able to avoid having harsh shadows fall on the model’s face as you might get in the middle of the day.

Even though sunglasses can cover a fair amount of the model’s face, I still think that sunglasses look best during sunrise or sunset, but also during blue hour. Even though the sun has set, there is still enough lighting available to hit the model’s face.

Another benefit of shooting sunglasses at blue hour is that you don’t have to worry about getting glare from the sun. In the photos below, I did a lifestyle beach photoshoot with model Austin Lee at Santa Monica and captured photos of his sunglasses during blue hour.

Different Ways to Wear Sunglasses

I like to photograph models wearing sunglasses in different ways. Here are some example ideas of how you can have the on-camera talent model the eyewear:

  • Model wearing the sunglasses (most obvious)

  • Model is about to put on or take off the sunglasses

  • Model has the sunglasses attached to the collar of their shirt

  • Model is adjusting the sunglasses on their face

  • Model is wearing the sunglasses on top of their head
